Ergonomic Material Handling

Lift tables, tilters, positioners and lift-assist carts — so the work comes to the person instead of the person bending to the work.

Home / Industrial / Ergonomic Material Handling

Most recordable back injuries on a plant floor trace back to the same few motions: lifting from the floor, reaching into a deep container, and twisting under load. Material handling equipment is how those motions get designed out — the load rises to working height, tilts toward the hands, and turns without the operator turning.

How to spec it

What this decision turns on.

Where the load starts and ends

Floor to bench, bench to conveyor, pallet to cart. Map the actual travel before choosing equipment — the worst motion in the sequence is the one to design out first.

Weight, and how often

A load lifted twice a shift and a load lifted two hundred times are different specifications, even at the same weight. Frequency drives powered versus manual more than mass does.

Reach depth

Reaching into a deep container is where backs get hurt. A tilter that presents the contents at an angle removes the reach entirely.

Who else has to get past it

Aisle width, turning radius and where the unit lives when it is not in use. Equipment that blocks a walkway gets pushed aside and stops being used.

Designing out a lifting injury?

Walk us through the motion — where the load starts, where it ends and how often. We will spec the equipment that removes it.

About Ergonomic Material Handling

Where does a material-handling review start?
By mapping the load’s actual travel — floor to bench, bench to conveyor, pallet to cart. The worst motion in that sequence is the one to design out first.
Powered or manual?
Frequency drives that more than weight does. A load lifted twice a shift and a load lifted two hundred times are different specifications at the same mass.

Working with Applied Ergonomics

What types of projects does Applied Ergonomics work on?
We work on projects of all sizes, from single-office setups to multi-floor corporate buildouts. Our services span workspace strategy, interior design, furniture specification, procurement, project management, and installation across healthcare, education, corporate, industrial, and hospitality environments.
How does the consultation process work?
We start with a conversation to understand your goals, challenges, and timeline. From there we develop a tailored approach that may include space planning, product recommendations, and a detailed proposal. There’s no obligation, and we’re happy to answer questions at any stage.
Do you work with architects and interior designers?
Absolutely. We regularly partner with architects and interior designers as a technical and execution resource, translating design intent into specific, high-performing solutions.
What geographic areas do you serve?
We serve clients nationally. While we’re headquartered in the Chicago area, our project management and installation capabilities extend across the United States.
Do you support ongoing facility needs after a project is complete?
Yes. We remain a consistent point of contact beyond project closeout—handling warranty coordination, reconfigurations, internal moves, modular system relocation and reuse, redesigns, and more. Our goal is continuity, not re-procurement.
